Do not let anybody tell you how Barcelona looks like. The best pics come out when they show a feeling, when they are the result of a life experience.  You will not find photos like these in a catalogue or in a travel guide of Barcelona.  These are photos of real people, of people like you, they have a heart and soul and you can only see them here.

How many times we travel looking for that typical picture shown in the leaflets of tourism of such and such city and when we are there we simply cannot find it… and we are right there?  that is because the eye makes the difference. Let’s run away from the typical manufactured view and let’s make something closer to reality.

At last Barcelona takes the train of the FASHION NIGHT OUT.

New York was the pioneer of the idea three years ago, in a bid to support the fashion industry.

Its original pretense was so simple – extending store hours along with additional incentives, all as remedies to shore up the weakening retail sector in New York City.  However a season later, the idea first facilitated by Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief, the legendary Anna Wintour, is now a global event, with 16 countries participating.

This is now a young classic,

and therefore Barcelona City Council is launching an initiative similar to that done by Vogue in major cities worldwide where it achieved major success, becoming a classic in a very short time period. One of its latest editions was in Madrid.

It is not only shopping, it is fun, shows, famous dj’s, parties and cocktails in all shops, bars, restaurants and hotels participating in the event. Gifts and all sorts of surprises and promotions in bars and participating stores. Barcelona, unable to ally with Vogue Spain because the magazine can only choose one city per country, has teamed up with Harper’s Bazaar which will host a big tent at one of the side roads of Passeig de Gràcia.

The key is buying flowers,

Passeig de Gràcia is the stage where the show is performed and the city will look gorgeous because that precise night the Christmas lighting will be switched on for the first night this year. Get your Shopping Passport and enjoy the shopping night. The passport is the accreditation that allows you the access for shopping at any of the stores that participates in the project -from 8 pm to 12 am-… and even to participate in 5 draws, with 5 fabulous prizes!

You can register during The Shopping Night at one of the two accreditation booths that you will find along the Passeig de Gràcia to get your Shopping Passport. (Rosselló street with Passeig de Gràcia and Gran Via with Passeig de Gràcia. From 10 am)…  Then all stores will open up to the big party.  Each time you buy for a value of 20 EUROS, a flower will be stamped on your Passport. Barcelona is in general, a safe city and not to visit it because you are afraid of what might happen is a terrible waste of a potentially wonderful experience. Problems are most likely to start when you don’t take the right precautions and so you start to be the victim to a scam or pick pocket or bag snatch. Thieves prefer to choose easy victims so keep your wits about you and let us give you some hints that will help.

Pick pockets and scam merchants choose easy victims and often work in group and very fast – if a group of people comes to you attempting to gain your attention, turn your back and walk away.

In the last 25 years, the city has become one of the favourite bases of operation for architects, designers, photographers, illustrators and creative professionals from all over the world.  These artistic professionals have turned design into one of Barcelona’s signs of identity, adding to the talent already in place, an building on the legacy of universal artists such as Gaudí, Miró, Tàpies or Brossa to name but a few.

After putting on one of the most impressive Olympic Games ever, Barcelona confirmed itself as the ideal context for major international events and launched itself as a benchmark city in the world of new trends and design.  The power behind all these activities lies in the creativity and enthusiasm of its inhabitants and the thousands of new residents, who arrive every year and choose it as the ideal city to live.

In line with Barcelona’s design fever from October 18th to 22nd, the city celebrates the BCN Design Week, organized by BCD (Barcelona Design Centre), an international business-focused congress in the field of design that annually attracts companies like Google, HP, Vodafone, Microsoft and internationally renowned speakers like Ezio Manzini from Politecnico di Milano or Víctor Grau chief of D-Lab of MIT (Masachussets Institute of Technology) who offer attendees the opportunity to learn, share and dive deeper in topics like mobile design or design for the Networked Cities.

With the slogan “Facing new challenges through design”, this new edition is committed to giving new impetus to the creative minds and entrepreneurs to successfully tackle the difficult current situation.

As part of the BCN Design Week initiative, the DHUB (Disseny Hub Barcelona) offers its permanent exhibition manufacturing laboratory, and Full Print3d, to the congress’ agenda. Located in Marqués de Llió palace (Moncada street, 12) DHUB is a center dedicated to promoting awareness, understanding and good use of the design world but can not be considered as a museum or a design institution, as its name suggests.  The new space is set as a hub for all the design proposals to be carried out in Barcelona.

¡Somos los campeones del mundo!  escribo esto con lágrimas en los ojos…  ¡que maravillosa y voluptuosa frase!…  nos lo hemos merecido.

Un mes ha sido, en el que se ha ido formando la bola poco a poco, en el que las pantallas más o menos megagigantes, han ido atrayendo gentes a pulsos, como polillas a la luz (y desde luego con mucha más convicción que con la que iba Caaaaroolaaainnnn…)   Aquí ha dado igual que te guste el fútbol o que lo aborrezcas, ha sido imposible permanecer en la isla del desconocimiento, porque esto ha ido más allá.  Es la fuerza de los sentimientos que nacen del corazón y del estómago, del hígado y del páncreas, de todas las vísceras juntas que gritan y te mueven el cuerpo sin que lo puedas controlar.

No sé que tiene el fútbol éste, que nos hace olvidar.  He visto gentes preparándose para los partidos con auténticos festines.  Mesas con marisco, el mejor jamón, lomo, chorizo, tortilla de patata… y todo ello regado con los mejores caldos (y no me refiero a los de pollo, naturalmente)… todo muy español.  He visto ventanas y fachadas y caras y gafas y sombreros teñidos de rojo y amarillo, de nuestros colores.  He visto el cielo rojo esta noche.  He oido gritos y consignas y petardos y fuegos artificiales y bocinazos para que el mundo se entere…

Nos lo hemos merecido.  Un partido de igual a igual, muy duro, dónde España queria jugar y los otros darnos… la del pulpo.  Mañana me desayunaré un buen zumo de naranja   ¿Álguien sabe que fue de la crisis? ya no hay, hoy no hay.   La memoria es selectiva y cuando nos dan esperanza y nos levantan la moral, se nos olvidan las penas.  A los que han hechado el resto llegando a Johannesburgo esta misma tarde, sólo para ver el partido y se vuelven mañana, a Manolo que se puso malito pero volvió para la final, los que han abarrotado las calles, a los que se han quedado en casa, a África y a Sara Carbonero… ¡ GRACIAS ! porque toda esa energia se ha transformado en el juego de un equipo que ha bailado casi como si no fueran humanos.

Como sabéis, Barcelona es sede todos los febreros del más importante congreso mundial de telefonía móvil el MWC y nos llegan gentes de todo el mundo, de los lugares más insospechados…

Llegan a una ciudad de la vieja Europa, mediterránea y llena de historia.  Recuerdo la perplejidad de un cliente que alquiló su apartamento en el Barrio Gótico.  El apartamento era una monada, totalmente reformado y decorado con muy buen gusto.  Nuestro amigo venía de oriente próximo, con sus desiertos, sus rascacielos último modelo, sus islas con forma de palmera… y claro, métete en lo que es el Barrio Gótico de Barcelona.  Pues un laberinto de calles estrechas, adoquinadas, mucha fachada de piedra y sol sólo en los pisos más altos.

Su reacción fue “explosiva” y había que convencerle en 30 segundos de que no se puede despreciar lo que no se conoce, pero ¿cómo explicarle a un saudí el concepto de gótico?.   No se me ocurrió otra cosa que repetirle muchas veces, con los ojos muy abiertos y moviendo mucho las manos a modo de ¡¡¡¿estoy poseída?!!!, las palabras “historia” “cultura” “herencia” y una vez más “gótico, gótico, gótico”.  Y funcionó.

Accedió a subir al apartamento y al final se quedó encantado con la casa, con su estancia en Barcelona y con la oportunidad que tuvo de conocer el mundo fuera de su burbuja de petro dólares.  Por cierto un saludo a nuestro cliente, que ya se ha convertido en un fan de Barcelona y de bizFlats y con el que más de una vez nos reímos recordándo aquella su primera experiencia con nosotros.

¿Verdad que estamos hartos de oír a la gente decir eso de “a mi me encanta viajar…”? (¿ehh? Hala venga, ¡y se nos llena la boca!)  Pues viajar y hacerlo bien es difícil; complicado.

Requiere sentido común y sentido del humor y ya sabemos que ninguno de los dos abunda.  Requiere también ponerse lo que yo llamo “la capa de teflón” que es la dosis precisa de… “me va a resbalar todo lo que me agreda”.

Como nuestro amigo, que se dejó llevar por la primera impresión y sólo tuvo que tener la paciencia suficiente para darse cuenta de que poniéndose “la capa” y rascando un poquito dentro de si mismo, pudo encontrar en lo que no conocía o no entendía, algo con lo que empatizar.

¿Alguien se cree que tener una casa en la Toscana, otra en el lago Como, la de Aspen para esquiar y la de…, es un lujo? pues no.  Una casa necesita cuidados, que se ocupen de ella y eso en lo que se convierte es en una trituradora de dinero, eso no se puede sostener aunque matemáticamente te lo puedas permitir.  ¿Alguien puede entender que uno se vaya de casa y deje todas las luces encendidas y el grifo de la ducha abierto? pues tampoco.  El derroche de agua y el gasto salvaje de energía nos insulta a todos.  Y por último, ¿alguien entiende cómo se puede vivir gastando más de lo que se gana? pues definitivamente no.  De esos barros, estos lodos.  Hemos vivido demasiado tiempo en la época de los excesos y la mala educación y de nada nos sirve justificarnos diciendo que estábamos metidos en esa espiral, que todo el mundo hacía lo mismo o que ese modo de vida ya se había convertido en una costumbre.

Es momento de cambiar, ya es hora. Seríamos muy torpes si estas situaciones de crisis, no provocaran una catarsis en todos nosotros que redecorara nuestras cabezas… seríamos muy torpes…

Y la forma en la que nos planteamos los viajes, también va a cambiar.  No todos tenemos amigos que nos puedan prestar sus casas y los hoteles no aportan nada nuevo, ya sabemos lo que son, la vida en 25 m2 y comer y cenar fuera, si o si.  Pero no es culpa de nadie, en todo este tiempo nadie había propuesto una idea fresca e innovadora, que nos enseñara otra cara del cubo.

¿Te imaginas que tu chico -aquí englobamos todas las categorías:  marido, novio, amigo con derecho a roce-  mientras tú te echas un sueñecito o te das un baño de espuma con velitas o te vas a renovar el armario, se mete en la cocina y cuando tú apareces en el salón te está esperando una copa de cava bien frío, la música adecuada y un aroma delicioso a cena romántica? (lo que nunca hace en casa, claro)… ¡chicos poneros las pilas que estamos de vacaciones! y las vacaciones son para hacer cosas distintas y eso no sólo es hacer turismo, ir a museos, al cine, visitar sitios nuevos… sino visitar sitios nuevos dentro de nuestros cerebros.

Es hacer cosas distintas con nuestros hábitos de vida, hablar mucho con nuestras parejas, con nuestros hijos, con nuestros padres… darle vacaciones a nuestra rutina y ocuparnos también un poco de mirarnos hacia dentro, a nosotros mismos y descubrir lo que realmente nos hace feliz.

Ni en la Toscana, ni en Gstaad.  En Barcelona, la ciudad que todo el mundo quiere conocer, tienes tu casa y nosotros la cuidamos para tí ¿quieres venir? vamos a ser los productores de la película que tú tienes en la cabeza.  Para tí, vamos a hacerlo realidad.

Estaba siendo un día de perros, de esos en los que no para de sonar el teléfono, el tráfico te asfixia, reuniones, visitas, unos zapatos que me estaban matando… en fin un día de estrés de los de no te menees.  Decido que me voy a casa, que ya está bien de tanto maltrato al cuerpo y después de ochocientas vueltas por fin encuentro un sitio para aparcar los caballos, aunque claro, a varias cuadras de casa.

La viva imagen del desmayo, eso era yo.  Iba por la calle como un autómata; por la Diagonal hacia Francesc Macià.

Me miraba en todos los escaparates de las tiendas, siempre lo hago como un insignificante acto de vanidad, pero ésta vez no me gustaba nada el reflejo del cristal, aunque no por eso dejaba de hacerlo… ¿masoquismo? no, esperanza… ¡quizá en la tienda de la esquina!…

“Está considerado como un oasis verde en pleno casco urbano”

Encarando la Avenida Pau Casals, el ruido del tráfico por lo menos ya no me machaca los oídos.  Es un bulevar con subidita, pero casi ni lo noto.  Voy pensando en mis cosas y estoy tan en babia que cruzando el paso de cebra entre Bori i Fontestá y Tenor Viñas, un pseudo juvenil furgonetero ideal de la muerte, encarnando la versión móvil del andamio y tras un agradable pitido, me grita: “G-U-A-P-A”.  Cualquiera no se despierta de sus ensoñaciones, con esa bofetada sonora que no tiene nada que envidiar a un atropello con todas las ruedas, hasta con la de repuesto.

“Su trazado es geométrico y paisajístico, sin elementos de gran dureza”

Eso me sacó del trance y de pronto me dí cuenta de que delante de mi había una imponente verja, una pequeña plaza y en su centro, una dramática escultura de la que salían cuerpos haciendo música; Pau Casals in memoriam…

No era la primera vez que la veía pero si la primera vez que la miraba de frente, despacio.  Me asomé por su parte derecha y detrás de ella al otro lado de la verja, había un caminito de tierra que se perdía en la vegetación.  Desde luego siempre había estado allí, pero yo siempre daba un rodeo por Ferran Agulló para ir a casa… parece que esta vez algo iba a cambiar.

“Tiene un estanque de nenúfares rodeado de plataneros y una gran pradera natural con tilos”

En la plaza hay una verja circular, en la verja cinco puertas y de ellas cinco caminos radiales a cada espacio del parque.  Dentro, la paz… es como si ya no estuviéramos en la ciudad.  Praderas, parterres, encinas, sauces, tilos, plataneros, pequeños bosques, esculturas, estanques, cenadores… una delicia que viene con todo incluído, como en las islas del caribe.

Voy paseando, y oigo pajarillos cantar incluso parece que el aire ha cambiado y desde luego la temperatura también, es más fresca.  Aún paseando, veo macizos de flores y luego zonas boscosas con toques de paisajismo.  Paseando veo árboles de robustos troncos con increíbles setas huéspedes y otros que albergan niños sobre sus ramas abiertas como brazos.

¿Qué está mirando la dama de bronce, ahí tan bien plantada en su pradera de tilos y chopos? pues el enigma de las aguas densas del estanque de nenúfares; el día que descubra lo que esconde su fondo, continuará su camino.  Le acaricio el brazo y deseándole suerte, me distrae el murmullo de las voces bajo unas blancas sombrillas.  Un quiosco con unas quince cuidadas mesas alrededor y suculentas tartas desfilando junto con horchatas y granizados… parece que es la hora del picnic.

El aire trae aromas de magnolias y yo parezco una mariposa a merced de los sentidos, vagando hacia donde cada uno me lleve… ahora es un lejano relinchar de caballos lo que me mueve, pero ¿dónde están?… busca… ¡busca!.  Ahí están.  Saliendo del verdor encabritados, los restos de un auriga tratando de gobernar a unas caballerías, que llevan galopando desde la década de los treinta gracias a Josep Borrell i Nicolau; escultor.  Estoy justo en la esquina superior derecha de este english-style garden, entre arte y naturaleza ¿o son la misma cosa? y me siento bien.  Voy hacia la puerta que abre la verja en ese punto y antes de salir contemplo la escena un minuto más y pienso… ¿dónde he estado?

En otro planeta, en un planeta verde de aire limpio y sonidos olvidados que me han hecho un boca a boca revitalizante; ha sido como estar en una tierra de leche y galletas, para un niño.

Born is charming. There is a bohemian coterie of designers, artists and just fashion lovers who reside in cosy apartments and lofts.

An the same time, Born is like a strong bittersweet cocktail itself.

Just sneak around the corner of art galleries and designer stores to see South American mamitas dancing to reggaeton in their hair-bead salon best. Pass the famous Chocolate museum and smell Pakistani families cooking their samosas.

Next to luxury apartments you can find crowded buildings without a lift where Catalan is not often spoken. Historically, this is one of the most multicultural areas of Barcelona. Did you know that 70% of Pakistanis living in Spain live in the province of Barcelona and that there are about 50.000 Latin American youths as well? In Born you can see, hear and feel it, while you keep wandering around its trendy bars and chic boutiques.

We ask the waiter for our check, and he agrees to bring it, but only on condition that we give him a besito… We head stright to Santa Maria del Mar to confess our sins.

On a short-cut narrow street we meet a common citizen of Born that scares us away in the direction of Barceloneta. Those big, shiny cucarachas – bless their souls!

No está en La Rambla, ni en Plaça Catalunya, ni El Born, ni en el Barrio Gòtico… está en una de las zonas más bonitas y exclusivas de la ciudad, así que debes moverte un poco. La Plaça de Francesc Macià tiene un gran peso específico ya que nace del cruce entre la alocada Avenida Diagonal y la preciosa Avenida de Pau Casals, con su bulevar lleno de flores. Ésta última termina en el Turó Park. Una de las impresionantes casas que rodean a este parque, es la residencia de D. Juan Antonio Samaranch, quién fue presidente del COI entre 1980 y 2001 y es su actual presidente de honor.

En una esquina del parque, hay un lugar dónde perderse. Te recomiendo que vayas con tiempo y sin prisas, porque es un lugar para disfrutar.  Es Luzio, una tienda de decoración… así es cómo la podríamos catalogar, pero en realidad es como si fueras de visita a la magnífica casa de un buen amigo.

Es un inmenso espacio diáfano ubicado en lo que fue el garaje del edificio, de hecho la entrada es por la rampa.  Al entrar todo huele bien, el tiempo se detiene y comienza el desfile de una colección de objetos y piezas únicas.  Me cuentan que muchos de ellos han sido rescatados de países tan dispares como Bélgica o India, de lugares tan románticos como el sur de Francia o Indonesia y de la cuna de la magia y la sabiduría, la siempre sorprendente China.  Son objetos y muebles con pasado, que juntos transmiten historias.

Prestígio, clase, calidad. Los sofás, las mesas, las lámparas, los cuadros y los artículos que los rodean, desprenden toneladas de buen gusto.  Desde luego olvídate de meterlos en tu ideal pisito de 90 m2, pero disfrutar mirando nunca le hizo mal a nadie y alguna pieza seguro que hacemos por que quepa.

La primera vez que entré en la tienda tuve un “déjà vu”.  En cierta ocasión paseando por el corso Magenta en Milán, muy cerca del famoso Castello Sforzesco, una tienda me llamó la atención y al entrar me quedé maravillada por las cosas que tenía, fue como un viaje sensitivo hacia los placeres de la buena vida.  No era un sitio de tendencias del momento, sino un universo de lujo discreto y de atracción por lo auténtico.  Se trataba de la prestigiosa casa Flamant Home Interiors.  Luego me enteré que muchos de los muebles y cosas de Luzio, vienen de la casa… todo encajó.

Es un lugar con feeling, iluminado por lámparas, focos, velas, candelabros y muy poca luz natural, con lo que es como si entraras en un cine a vivir una película propia, la que tú quieras inventarte.  Cuando te vas, comienzas el ascenso por esa rampa de garage y la luz de la calle te va iluminando la cara y deslumbrándote los ojos y al fin sales y te encuentras de nuevo con la vorágine de la vida que parecía haberse detenido dos segundos antes, en la paz de unas catacumbas de lujo.  Lo que te quedan son dos sensaciones:  un gusto muy agradable y unas ganas locas de volver.
